This week in smart home news;
Rumours are afoot that Google is considering bringing Nest Labs back under their control in their hardware division. As it currently stands, Nest operates alone under Alphabet, however with the increasing threat of Amazon and their drive to win the smart home battle, Google appears to be doubling down and bringing in Nest for back up in order to slay Amazon.
Amazon are scheduled to release a new camera with artificial intelligence that can be used to detect and classify objects and people. Google have something similar with Google Clips but Amazons efforts appear to be aimed more towards developers than consumers. It’s too early to say how this is going to pan out but I reckon it’s going to be the start of some really cool home hacks, watch this space.
For those who like to tinker you’ll be pleased to hear Google are planning to release a do it yourself smart camera. In their own words, the AIY vision kit “lets you build an image recognition device that can see and identify objects, powered by TensorFlow’s machine learning models. All you need is a Raspberry Pi Zero W, a Raspberry Pi Camera 2, and a blank SD card. A free Android app is coming soon to help you easily control your device“. The kit is due to be released in December and should be priced at around £30.
